Danielle D’Aoust
Ceramic / felt monstrosities
hi!
I’m Danielle, an emerging artist and craftsperson whose practice sits in the uncanny place between childlike wonder and the heavier parts of being human. Sculpture has become the place where I explore my identity as a Mad, queer, and disabled person, and where I give form to the personal and historical traumas that have shaped me. Working with ceramic, textiles, wood, and paper maché, I build figurative pieces that become physical manifestations of things that I feel.
Someone once called me a “crafty mom,” and obviously they were right in a way, but that label pushed me further into questioning who gets to decide what is art, what is craft, and why those distinctions matter. So I now focus on traditionally crafty materials and go from there.
Alongside my sculptural work, I make utilitarian ceramics. They are objects meant to be held, used, and lived with. I love putting care into every mug that will greet your lips in the morning, or a silly dish to make your space uniquely you are. In a world that can feel very yucky, I think surrounding your home, body and life with locally hand made objects is a little act of resistance and joy.
I went to NSCAD University and got a fine arts degree in Ceramics. Now I am living in North Bay Ontario located on the unceded traditional territory of the Anishinabek Nation, home to the Nipissing and Dokis First Nations.
